7 Deadly Sins of Social Media

1) Leave your account idle – Not using your social media account for over a month (possibly even shorter) you may see people losing interest, going through the list of users they follow and simply lose interest

2) Not responding – Certain repeat messages, thanks and other messages might be able to pass, but when someone asks about your product/service, make sure you are there to answer

3) Different behind the scenes – Responding to your followers/fans publicly and then not doing it privately (ie. through direct messages) is not a good idea. You can’t be two-faced

4) Transparency is important – It is important that you are transparent. Don’t hide negative comments on your Facebook page or delete them. Once written, they are there (unless complete spam, of course)

5) Solve problems – Make sure when you respond to problems, that you don’t leave it at that. Solve that problem or direct to someone that can. All the transparency in the world doesn’t matter if you don’t find a solution or pass it on to someone who will.

6) Negative with negative – Responding to negative comments with a negative comment. An eye for an eye makes the world blind; well in this case the whole world sees, you are just too busy being negative/offensive to care

7) Different accounts – You create 3 different accounts with 3 different looking logos, 3 different personalities conveyed to the follower/fan. Make sure that when someone goes from one account to the next, they feel that it is still the same profile, just a different social media network.

In the end, when in doubt, try it out. Test it on a friend and see what they think. Have them look at your responses, go from one account to the next and get them to give you an example problem/situation that might arise and have you solve it right then and there.

A good thing to remember: Social media is just as much PR as it is marketing
